Why Cigar Etiquette Matters on the Golf Course

Golf courses are a great place to enjoy a cigar, but they’re also a shared space that requires respect for others. Smoking cigars on the course can add to the experience, but it’s important to double-check with your playing group before lighting up a cigar in their immediate vicinity.

Can you smoke cigars on a golf course? The short answer is — yes, 99% of the time. Most courses allow cigar smoking, but confirming the policy ahead of time never hurts. Luckily, cigars and golf are such a classic combo that if cigars are not permitted on a given course, there will be signage explicitly calling it out.  But don’t worry, cigar etiquette on the golf course can be boiled down to a few simple rules so you can enjoy your cigars while keeping the game fun for everyone.

Essential Golf Course Cigar Etiquette

The majority of cigar golf course etiquette can be boiled down to five simple rules:

One Stay Downwind

Position yourself so your cigar smoke drifts away from your playing partners, particularly when they are hitting the ball.

Two Ash Responsibly

Don’t tap your ash on the green, tee box or fairway.

Three Use a Cigar Holder

Don’t put your cigar on the grass, cart seats or cup holders (both for fire safety reasons and that they put a bunch of chemicals on the grass you don’t want in your mouth).

Four Come Prepared

Bring your own cutter, torch lighter (filled with butane) and travel humidor. Don’t rely on your playing partner or the tee shop to supply you with the essentials.

Five Share Generously

Golf is all about camaraderie. Bringing extra cigars to share with your group is always a kind gesture to set you up as a solid playing partner.
